Mommy Adventures: The First Day of School

It came in the nick of time. This is exactly what he needed: to get out of the house.

The parents and students were greeted by a very warm reception by the principal, the teachers and the rest of the staff. There was food everywhere! Being used to Ateneo, the big school that Captain Awesome went to in the Philippines, this was far less crowded. The parking and drop-off/pick-up areas were well-organized. The parents all complied with the school’s request to maintain a good traffic flow.

His class size is a lot smaller, too, but that didn’t matter too much to us. He excelled in a class of 41 and, I’m sorry if I have my competitive gear on, but this would make it a lot easier for him to earn recognition. They had a pop spelling quiz on the first day that he aced effortlessly. When I saw the words that they had to spell, I was like, Really? For a kid who uses the words “obliterate”, “exponential” and such in his vocabulary, the spelling quiz was a no-brainer. Well, it was the first day of school, after all. I bet the lessons will get harder.

There’s a Welcome Back to School Barbecue tomorrow and I realized I’m a school-parent without Um for the first time. It’s going to be painful going there by myself, repeating to everyone who might be interested where my husband is blah blah blah. Then again, single parents are very common these days that maybe they’ll just assume I am one. That’s not so bad. I have high respects for single mothers.

Captain Awesome seems to be enjoying himself so much. I am loving the school, too, though it might be premature to already have such conclusive feelings. One thing I can truly appreciate after three days of school is the fact that I haven’t caught eyes staring at me, silently guessing my age and passing judgment on how young I am to have a son in the second grade. Oh…and the absence (so far) of trophy, nosy wives. :)
